Imprint varies slightly. First published in 1759--66 as a continuation of An universal history, from the earliest account of time to the present, 1736--44 (1779--81 ed., q.v.). When the 'ancient part' of the history was completed in 1744 in seven large folio volumes with an eighth volume of additions issued in 1750, it was decided to publish the remainder of the material separately. The sections on France, Italy, and Germany were contributed by Tobias Smollett; volumes XLIX--XLII are a supplement containing the history of England, Scotland and Ireland. Volumes V--XV are dated 1781; volumes XVI--XXVIII, 1782; volumes XXIX--XXXVII and XXXIX--XLII, 1783; and volumes XXXVIII and XLI-- XLII, 1784. 'The Ancient Part' was published in 18 vols from 1779--81. Imprint varies slightly. There is a folded table in vol. XXV. ESTC t41325.

Copy Notes Imperfect? Lacking the map recorded in ESTC. Annotation in ink on the front free-endpaper of vol. III giving a list of the 'Croisades' with reference See page 413. Uniformly bound with the companion edition of An universal history [i.e. the ancient part], 1780--84 (q.v.).

Binding Late C18th calf, gilt-ruled and dotted spine with gilt-tooled sunbursts in the compartments, red morocco spine-labels including the brief contents of each volume.
