The plates are dated 1790--1794 but no earlier edition of this work tracing the initiation rites of the Freemasons back to Egyptian origins has been traced. Hooked on Books 3.4.
Copy Notes On the evidence of the binding this copy is from the library of the Frederick Augustus, Duke of York (1763--1827), as are two further masonic works in Soane's library, Lalande's Abrégé de l'histoire de la franche-maçonnerie, Londres, 1779 (q.v.) and a copy of the statutes of the 'Loge Française Royale Yorcke De L'Amitié', Berlin, 1789 (q.v.), which have the same armorial binding stamp and are both inscribed in pencil by the unidentified bookseller The Duke of York's Copy; the same hand has inscribed the front endpapers in all three works as Collated. Inscribed 12/- in pencil on final free-endpaper.
Binding C19th marbled calf, roll-tooled gilt borders, gilt-tooled spine, black morocco spine-label, stamped at the foot of the spine with the Garter and royal crown encircling the royal lion (21 x 13 mm), the crest of Frederick Augustus, Duke of York blind-tooled Greek key turn-ins, marbled endpapers.
