First published in 1580; the 1593 edition is also in Soane's library (q.v.). Jean Bodin, an influential legal and political theorist, acted as judge in several witchcraft trials. This work surveys cases of witchcraft, lycanthropy and demonic possession, the identification of witches, interrogation techniques including the use of torture, and court procedure. Includes 'Refvtation Des Opinions De Iean VVier.' (ff. 218 recto--276 recto). Johann Weyer disagreed with Bodin in calling for clemency in cases of witchcraft. The work is discussed in Scott's Letters on demonology and witchcraft, 1830 (q.v.). Architectural woodcut printer's device with initials 'I.D.P.' on title-page.

Copy Notes Various inscriptions in ink and pencil on the front endpapers including previous ownership inscription (?)Ch. Charost. 1708 [or possibly M. Marost] and in another, fainter hand A Mr. (?)Durans avocat / [illegible] 1741. Without a Soane bookplate. Booksellers' hieroglyphs in ink and pencil on rear pastedown. Marginalia and underlinings in ink in an early hand, some cropped at the fore-edge.

Binding C17th(?) limp parchment, spine-title in ink 'Bodins / Demonom/anie des / Sorciers'.
