La Belle Assemblée, or Bell's Court and Fashionable Magazine commenced publication in February 1806, and continued through various changes of title until 1847. The plates are a portrait of the Duchess of Devonshire to accompany a biographical sketch, a folded plate of music printed on both sides, a plate showing a decorative frieze with Greek key and foliate motifs, and a hand-coloured fashion plate. John Bell was a major figure in the London printing and book trade who specialized in relatively cheap pocket format classics and in newspapers and magazines.
