The French traveller and natural scientist Thévenot travelled in the Levant and Egypt in 1655--1659. After returning to France where he arranged for publication of the first part of his travels, in 1663 he set off for a second voyage to the Middle East, Persia and India, for a time in the company of the merchant and travel writer Jean-Baptiste Tavernier (q.v.). He died in Iran after an accidental pistol-wound in 1667. Thévenot's Relation d'un voyage fait au Levant first appeared in Paris, 1664--1684, with the second and third parts of his travels being published posthumously from his journals. The preface of the English edition is signed by the translator Archibald Lowell. Each part has a separate, dated, title-page.
