Niebuhr was a German surveyor and the sole survivor of the Danish party of five specialists sent to explore Egypt, Arabia, and Syria in 1761. His research is one of the most authoritative descriptions of Arabia, and the Yemen in particular. His account of the Royal Danish Expedition of 1761--1767 appeared in two versions. The first account appeared in 1772 as Beschreibung von Arabien (Kopenhagen, Nicolaus Möller), which was republished in 1773 in a fuller version under the title Reisebeschreibung nach Arabien und andern umliegenden Ländern (Kopenhagen, Nicolaus Möller). F.L. Mourier's translation of Niebuhr's first Beschreibung first appeared in 1773 under Möller's imprint (Copenhague: chez Nicolas Möller, imprimeur); this is its second edition. The plates of this edition were engraved by N. van der Meer, jun., C.J. de Huyser, Th. Koning and C. Philips Jacobz. Pages xvii and xxix are misnumbered xii and xxxi respectively.
