First published in 1699, this work was suppressed in France but widely published outside and in translation. This is the copy mentioned in Soane's 'Italian Sketches and Mema' sketchbook, 1778--9 (SM Vol. 164, p. 22) and 'Notes Italy & Italian Language' sketchbook, 1780 (SM Vol. 162, p. 1). See Du Prey, John Soane's architectural education, 1977, p. 283 and footnotes 49--51 on p. 529.In two parts; part 2 with inserted special title-page reading as above, '... Parte Seconda.'; pagination and register otherwise continuous. Frontispiece engraved by B. Cimarelli with title in French. Page 259 (fol. R2) is unpaginated, p. 261 is numbered '26'.

Copy Notes Bound as one volume. C.J. Richardson's manuscript catalogue of Soane's library compiled between August 1830 and September 1831 notes that it was bought at Rome/ in 1778. Architectural pencil-sketches and inscriptions in English and Italian by Soane on endpapers; also extensive pencil vocabulary notes on pp. 1--6 of the 'Discorso Della Poesia Epica', and pp. 38--195 of the text (Libri 1--8). Lengthy extracts are translated into English in the 'Notes Italy' sketchbook of 1780, leaves 171v--169v.

Binding C18th Italian quarter sheep, block-printed decorated paper boards, gilt-tooled spine with flower motifs, direct-lettering within panel.
