With a list of subscribers, an index and an appendix. This collection of the works of the Stoic philosopher Epictetus is the first edition of a major work of female Greek scholarship. Elizabeth Carter (1717--1806) was an early contributor to the Gentleman's Magazine, where she made the acquaintance of Samuel Johnson: their friendship lasted fifty years. The present work was undertaken at the request of her close friend Catherine Talbot, who arranged the publication and circulated potential subscribers. The list includes the Prince and Princess of Wales and Dr Johnson. There is an interesting preponderance of women subscribers. Among those with Johnson connections are Mrs Cutts, Mary Masters, Hester Mulso and Catherine Talbot; also Elizabeth Montagu and Lady Bradshaigh. See D.D. Eddy and J.D. Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 14s., 9 June 1804. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.1.4). With the price and bookseller's codes inscribed in pencil on the front free-endpaper. Inscription in ink on rear pastedown Payne with a further code, in another hand.
