Rivarol's treatise on the universality of the French language was first published in 1784 and met with a favourable reception, with a second edition being published in the following year. Rivarol, a royalist, left France in 1792, at first for Brussels and later London and Hamburg, where he began work on a project for a new French dictionary. This new, corrected edition of his treatise was issued in 1797 with part 1 of the Discours préliminaire du nouveau dictionnaire de la langue française (q.v.) as an inducement to subscribers to the proposed dictionary, but the project failed and Rivarol died in Berlin in 1801.
