ROUSSEAU, Jean-Jacques (1712--1778)
[Pensées. 1764]
Esprit, maximes, et principes de M. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, de Genève.
A Neuchatel, et en Europe chez les libraires associés, 1764.
xxiv, 444 p. ; 20.1 cm. (8º)

A pirated edition of the 'Pensées' (Amsterdam, 1763) which were extracted from Rousseau's works by L.L. Prault and edited by J. de Laporte, with altered title and order of contents. In this edition the woodcut title vignette shows a small rustic scene, and p. 444 line 1 is 'Du Gout. Page 324.' A variant setting with same pagination and register has a floral title vignette and line 1 reading 'De L'Étude. 344.' Another edition has 464 pages. See T. Dufour, Recherches bibliographiques sur les oeuvres imprimées de J.J. Rousseau (Paris 1925), no. 300--2.

Copy Notes Without the engraved frontispiece portrait recorded elsewhere. Inscribed in ink on bookplate 1819, presumably the date of its acquisition by Soane. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpaper in 72 [underlined]. A couple of marks of emphasis and MS. annotations in pencil in the margins, giving English translations of terms in the text.

Binding C18th half mottled calf, gilt-ruled thick-thin borders and spine, marbled-paper boards, gilt-ruled spine, maroon leather spine-labels.
