The first part, Les confessions de J.J. Rousseau, was first published posthumously together with the unfinished Rêveries du promeneur solitaire in 1782 (q.v.); the Seconde partie was first published in 1789 in two volumes numbered as 'Tome Troisième' and '... Quatrième' to follow the two volumes of the first part. Volume III with urn vignette on title page; vol. IV with lyre vignette. Half titles; head pieces. Contents: Vol. III: Livre VII--Livre IX; -- vol. IV: Livre X--Livre XII.
Copy Notes Some marks of emphasis in pencil by Soane. Verso of vol. III front free-endpaper inscribed in ink Richardson p. 214 Liv. 11 / Oronooko / Julie / decay of the French /Government & /change of Consti / -tution p. 270. Bought as a set with the first part of the Confessions, 1782 (q.v.).
Binding C18th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt edgings, gilt-tooled spine with sunbursts, red and black spine-labels. Bound uniformly as vols III--IV of the Les confessions, 1782 (q.v.).
