The translator of Eloisa = William Kenrick. His translation was first published in 1762. A classic in educational theory, Émile is also, as Rousseau himself points out, a philosophical treatise on the goodness of human nature. The work seeks to follow the natural unfolding of a young man raised in rural isolation, unsubjected to the corrupting influences of society. Rousseau's radical ideas, especially his proposal to substitute sentimental deism for the dogma of revealed religion, aroused the wrath of the ecclesiastical and civil authorities; the book was condemned, and Rousseau, threatened with arrest, fled the country. The plates are the same as those in the edition of 1767. The engraved frontispiece-portrait of the author by Salvador after R. Gardelle in vol. I is dated 1754; the other plates are by Charles Nicolas Cochin and Charles Dominique Joseph Eisen. With: 'Emilius and Sophia; Or, The Solitaries. By J.J. Rousseau. Being A Sequel To Emilius. Found amongst The Author's Papers After His Decease', at end of vol. IV with separate half title but continuous pagination and register. Index at the end of vol. IV. ESTC t136465.
