William Kenrick's translation of La nouvelle Héloïse first appeared in 1761, the year of the book's original publication in Amsterdam. Rousseau's epistolary novel about a young man's requited love for a virtuous wife, drawing on his frustrated love for Mme. d'Houdetot, was one of the most important of the eighteenth century and is regarded as a forerunner of the Romantic novel. 'A dialogue between a man of letters and Mr. J.J. Rousseau, on the subject of romances. ... ' (a translation of 'Préface de la Nouvelle Héloïse'), published separately in 1761, is here reprinted after the preface by the translator in vol. I, pp. [xvii]--lxi. An account of the work taken from the Journal des Sçavans for June 1761 is included after the prefaces to vol. I, p. [1]--[6]. The plates are engraved by Hubert Gravelot.
