Jean de La Bruyère's translation of Theophrastus first appeared in 1688. Colophon: 'De l'Imprimerie de C.F. Simon ...'. Half title page reads: 'Les Caracteres De Théophraste, Avec Les Caracteres Ou Les Moeurs De Ce Siecle, Par M. De La Bruyere.' He also comments on literary subjects and certain authors. His election to the French Academy in 1693 on the strength of this work was seen as a victory for the party of the 'Ancients' against the 'Moderns'. Includes the 'Discours Sur Théophraste' by La Bruyère and the 'Discours Prononcé Dans L'Académie Françoise, ...' 15 June 1693 with preface, and a 'Clef Des Caractères De La Bruyère' identifying the subjects.
