THEOPHRASTUS (372--287 B.C.)
[Characters. French. 1765]
Les caractères de Théophraste, et de La Bruyere. Avec des notes par M. Coste. Nouvelle édition.
A Paris chez Hochereau; et Panckoucke, 1765.
viii, 484 p., engr. frontis. port. ; 38.7 cm. (4º)

Jean de La Bruyère's translation of Theophrastus first appeared in 1688. Colophon: 'De l'Imprimerie de C.F. Simon ...'. Half title page reads: 'Les Caracteres De Théophraste, Avec Les Caracteres Ou Les Moeurs De Ce Siecle, Par M. De La Bruyere.' La Bruyère used his translation of Theophrastus as an introduction to his ironic, spirited essays on the follies and social injustices of his age, as observed by him at the French court. He also comments on literary subjects and certain authors. His election to the French Academy in 1693 on the strength of this work was seen as a victory for the party of the 'Ancients' against the 'Moderns'. Includes the 'Discours Sur Théophraste' by La Bruyère and the 'Discours Prononcé Dans L'Académie Françoise, ...' 15 June 1693 with preface, and a 'Clef Des Caractères De La Bruyère' identifying the subjects. With engraved frontispiece portrait of La Bruyère, title-page vignette, head and tail pieces.
