'R. Stephanus' second octavo edition. The Zurich version is here printed in parallel columns with the Vulgate, lined in red, with marginal notes which profess to be drawn from memoranda made by friends of the editor during the lectures of F. Vatablus. The Vulgate edition was from Estienne's first octavo edition of 1534 which was from his folio edition of 1532. The Zurich edition (the 'Zürich Latin Bible') was first printed in 1543 being a translation from the Hebrew by Leo Juda and Theodorus Bibliander. The Apocrypha was translated by Pierre Cholin. The New Testament was a revision of Erasmus' version prepared by Rudolf Gwalther. The Vulgate version and that of Leo Juda et al. Darlow & Moule 6127; Adams B1037.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting title-page. Bibliographical notes inscribed in ink on first free-endpaper; notes on damage prior to 1837 by George Bailey. Losses to the fore-edge of the Books of Esther and Job, with loss of text. Loss at head of final leaf with text of the first 15 lines supplied in ink.

Binding C17th calf, covers with blind double-ruled frame with additional vertical line, blind-ruled spine, C18th paper label with spine title in ink: 'Biblia Sacra 1545./ Rob. Stephani'.
