Reprint of the 4-volume 'En Suisse' edition of 1779--80, with a fifth supplementary volume entitled Supplément au dictionnaire de chymie, contenant la théorie et la pratique de cette sciences, ... par Mr. Henri Struve, ... Tome V. Macquer was an influential member of the Paris scientific community. Though most of his work preceded Joseph Priestley's discovery of oxygen, Macquer seems to have been conscious of the defects of the phlogistic hypothesis, and the Dictionnaire was his most important publication. In the Supplement, page 369 (the first page of the index) is misnumbered '169'. Ferguson, Bibliotheca Chemica (Glasgow 1906), II, p. 60.
Copy Notes Unopened. A copy of 'Macquers Chymistry 2', presumably referring to an edition in two volumes, was bought on 24 April 1806 for 3s. from Thomas Boone, whose bill is annotated in Soane's hand Mr. Turner as is the purchase of a copy of 'Plutarch folio' for 6s., both evidently being bought on Turner's behalf. (Spiers Box).
Binding Late C18th publisher's original blue paper limp covers, printed paper spine-labels reading 'Dictionnaire De Chymie. Tome I (-- V).'.
Reference Number 465
Additional Names Thomas Boone; Struve, Henri (1751--1826); Turner, Mr
