This is the first true 'Gothic' novel, first published anonymously in 1765 [i.e. 24 December 1764] with an elaborate preface describing the fictional author in order to conceal the identity of the true author, Horace Walpole. Its reception was so favourable that Walpole revealed his authorship when the second edition was published six months later, and it has remained in print until the present day. Onuphrio Muralto is a pseudonym for Horace Walpole; 'William Marshal, Gent.' is fictitious. Includes the prefaces to both the first and second editions. On page xii of the introductory matter is a 'Sonnet to the Right Honourable Lady Mary Coke', signed 'H. W.' ESTC t63200; Hazen, p. 56.
