Historic doubts on the life and reign of King Richard the Third. By Mr. Horace Walpole. The second edition.
London (Place), printed for J. Dodsley,, 1768.
xv, [1], 134, [2] p., frontis. port., [1] pl. ; 24.0 cm. (4º)

Although Walpole was no historian, this volume is not without importance as marking the point at which history in England began to show self-consciousness, an awareness that "history is written by the victors" and records should therefore be viewed with scepticism. The first edition consisted of 1,250 copies, and sold out so quickly that another quarto printing was called for almost at once. Includes portraits of Richard III, and of Richard III with Queen Ann, engraved by Charles Grignion after drawings by George Vertue. The final unnumbered leaf contains an addendum and directions to the binder. ESTC t145482.

Copy Notes Bought at Lord Lyttelton's Sale (q.v.), 1--6 July 1823, fourth day, lot 99 (part, with Lord Camelford's Narrative and proofs, 1785, q.v.; 'Sermons and Tracts' dated 1797; and Wollaston's The religion of nature delineated, 1716, q.v.) for £1 16s. (Journal, 11 July 1823).
