WALPOLE, Horace, 4th Earl of Orford (1717--1797)
[Correspondence. Selections. 1818]
Letters from the Hon. Horace Walpole, to George Montagu, Esq. from the year 1736, to the year 1770. Now first published from the originals, in the possession of the editor.
London: printed for Rodwell and Martin, and Henry Colburn, 1818.
[4], 446, [10] p. ; 28.6 cm. (4º)

Probably edited by the bibliographical bookseller John Martin, who deleted many personal names. Also issued as vol. VI in continuation of the edition of The works (5 vols, 1798, q.v.) edited by Mary Berry. For the separate issue, as here, a general title-page and engraved frontispiece was withheld and, in this copy at least, no errata slip was included. At the end there is an 8-page supplement of 'Names Of Persons Mentioned In The Foregoing Letters', printed and circulated privately some time after publication with the sequence of signatures indicating it was intended to be placed in the Letters, and a final leaf of publishers' advertisements. See A.T. Hazen, A bibliography of Horace Walpole, no. 29.

Copy Notes Pencil annotations on pp. 12--13, 15--17 and 20--23, filling in abbreviated personal names. Pages [2--5] of the 'Names Of Persons Mentioned' are detached and folded.

Binding C19th diced russia, gilt double-ruled borders, gilt double-ruled and direct-lettered spine, marbled edges. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 12s., 27 January 1831. (Archive 7/15/8).

Reference Number 480
