Copy Notes Inscriptions in ink indicating Tab. 1 etc passim and a calculation in ink on p.13. Ink marks against some of the names of the directors of the Bank listed in the dedication. At some point after the binding of this volume in 1831, it was used as a receptacle for a collection of miscellaneous letters and hand documents relating to line calculations of interest, annuities and his valuation of property. These are tipped together in two groups, as follows:
Group 1, loosely inserted at the front of the volume, comprises:
- Folded half-sheet containing a calculation on The present value of £42. Premium expectant on the decease of a person aged 35 ..., signed by Rich. Barnes, West[minster] Life Office, 14 June 1803, previously folded and sealed as an envelope addressed in ink on the final verso to James Spiller Esq., with a list of names in a different hand;
- Undated folded half-sheet (watermark 'J WHATMAN / 1794'), inscribed on first verso: What is the present value of one pound for a life of a person of the age of 40 - Int at 5 per cent? with calculations;
- Folded quarter-sheet with ALs in ink in Italian on first recto: Nell momento che Labruzzi fa i suoi compli / menti all' Sig. Soan lo prega avolerli fa / vorire uno delli suoi lapis d'ingilterra non / sapendo dove poter comprare cosa simile onde / prega a scusare la liberta e pieno di / stima si dichiara suo obidiente / Servo Labruzzi /14 Xbre 1779 [probably Pietro Labruzzi (1739--1805) or his younger brother Carlo Labruzzi (1748--1817)]; addressed in ink on final verso Per il signor [J.Soan] - torn corner of the sheet with [Soane's] inscription in faded brown ink listing names of sites: La Trabeazione del Giardino Collonna / Le Bagne di Agrippa / La Pianta di Pompeio. See P. de la Ruffinière du Prey, John Soane's architectural education (New York and London 1977), p. 282 and n.42;
- Document in ink headed: Bruton St. House / 21 Yrs from Mich: 1797 - expires Mich 1818 11 ½ Years from Lady day 1806 ... [12 in pencil inserted above 11] with calculations over two sides, written on the blank sections of a note in ink in another hand: Major Higgins has received the Commands / of His Royal Highness the Duke of / Gloucester, to request the honour of Mr / Pattersons company to dinner, on Saturday / the 8th March at six o'clock / Gloucester House 1806 [possibly Soane's friend and client John Patterson, a native of Norwich, whom Soane first in Rome in 1778];
- Folded sheet with MS. docket-title Copy of Mr Gorham's / 2d. Valuation. Having regard to the / Reversionary Interest, containing a valuation of premises situate on the south side of Pall Mall ... Surveyed and valued Novr. 1784, annotated in pencil with underlinings.
Group 2, tipped onto the third front free-endpaper, comprises:
- Proposals for publishing by subscription, by William Hamilton, R.A. and P.W. Tomkins, engraver, ... a print from the transparent painting exhibited ... in the front of the Bank, in celebration of His Majesty's complete recovery and publkic visit to St. Paul's Cathedral ..., 1789 (q.v.); on the back a drawing in ink of an architectural feature;
- Drawing (Italian?) of a frieze with figures, horses and chariots in pencil, pen and ink, and grey wash, on a leaf measuring 16.0 x 22.3 cm; pin holes as if removed from case or volume; with inscription in ink in Italian B Pare Diana ed Endimione;
- Engraved plate cropped just outside the platemark (14.4 x 18.2 cm), signed 'St. Non. Sc'., from a series of 8 views of the 'Moulin Joli', etched by Jean Claude Richard de Saint-Non after Jean-Baptiste Le Prince;
- Folded ALs addressed to John Soane Esqr. / Lincolns Inn Fields: Mr Babbage begs leave to / remind Mr Soane that / he leaves Town tomorrow / morning, and therefore requests / of him to expedite the Painting / as his absence may be very short. / Fleet Street, Wednesday morng, used as scrap paper for calculations;
- Undated note signed in ink MCS[?]: I return your Book my dear / Sir ... & will / have the pleasure calling on you / at any time today that you are disingaged ... with (later?) postscript Saturday morn[in]g / are you are disingaged on Monday Ev[eni]ng instead of / this afternoon;
- Folded ALs from Jno: Taitt dated Oxford St / 2 May 1789 addressed to Mr Soane, regarding the lease to General Gunning of the villa on / Twickenham Common, called Gifford Lodge / the property of the late Marchioness of / Tweeddale and transmitting the executors' request for a plan of the grounds, elevation of the house, and valuation for the whole, with Soane's figures and calculations on the inner fold and a sketched plan in ink on the final verso;
- Folded half-sheet with further calculations in black and red ink;
- Folded half-sheet with sketched floor and ground plans of a house with measurements and pond and other details, and a brief note and sum: £2000;
- Quarter-sheet with inscription in pencil in Soane's hand giving a series of place names(?) with initials in another hand at side: H / G F / E / D;
- Drawing (Italian?) of a frieze depicting 10 figures of nude men and women, drapes, some with wings, some bearing flares and stalks, in pencil, pen and ink, and grey wash, on a leaf measuring 22.5 x 16.5 cm; pin holes as if removed from case or volume; in ink above Matei;
- Quarter-sheet with plan and elevation in ink on recto, and calculations in pencil on recto and verso, in Soane's hand;
- Quarter-sheet inscribed recto and verso in ink giving references to pages and tables in the book (Smart) and working out calculations: Ground Rents utmost Fee Simple 25 years Peacock & Skinner / Freehold in House is worth [ ] Yrs. Purchase / NB. Gwilt survey'd Mr Adams Houses in / the Borough for Mr. Bryant & valued / the front Houses at 14 years Purchase / neat Rent. & the Court at 12 years ... Simple interest ... see p. 112. Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-ruled spine with false bands, maroon morocco spine-label. This is probably the copy of 'Tables of Interest thin 4to' half-bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 3s. 6d., 24 October 1831. (Archives 7/16/29).
