With engraved frontispiece by Bernard Baron after Louis Cheron. The dedication is signed 'Mat. Prior', i.e. the diplomat and poet Matthew Prior. The first of two collections of his poems under this title was first published in 1709. This subscription edition published by Jacob Tonson was conceived as a solution to Prior's financial difficulties following his release from prison in 1716 and the end of his political career, and contains some previously uncollected poems. With a list of 1445 subscribers (for 1786 books), and three final contents leaves. ESTC n66024.
