A few of Donne's letters had been published in the Poems and in LXXX Sermons, but the present work, edited by Donne's son, contains 129 letters and represents the first attempt at publishing Donne's collected letters. The first and last leaves are blank. ESTC r1211; Wing D1864; G. Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the frontispiece portrait of Donne, pp. 61--64, and the initial blank leaf. The first 33 letters numbered in pencil (to p. 96). A few ink and pencil annotations passim. Inscribed in ink on title-page Henry Some; also, Ja Chillon. Bound (1) with Donne's Biathanatos, 1644 (q.v.), and Juvenilia, 1633 (q.v.), both also with ownership inscriptions of Henry Some. In July 1798 Soane had paid for a certificate for armorial bearings, having adopted without being entitled to do so the arms of Thomas Some of Waversdon. Curatorial or bookseller's note in pencil on front pastedown Wants Pages 61 to 64 (with marker chit inserted), and at bottom: Lot 1484. Bought on Soane's behalf by W. Boone at the sale of the first part of the library of Soane's friend the newspaper editor James Perry, day 7, lot 1484 for 6s. (Priv. Corr. XVI.E.4.13; see also annotated copy of the R.H. Evans sale catalogue in the British Library).

Binding C19th sprinkled calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-tooled spine, green morocco spine-label.
