'Democritus Iunior' = Robert Burton. This is the first edition of one of the most popular works of the seventeenth century for its learning, humour and pedantry, which continued to be revised by the author in later editions. Although it fell out of favour in the eighteenth century, it was much admired by Samuel Johnson, and much borrowed from by Laurence Sterne in Tristram Shandy. 'The Couclusion [sic] of the Author to the Reader', signed 'Robert Burton. From My Studie in Christ-Church Oxon. Decemb 5. 1620'. With a final errata leaf.
