Anonymous. Translated and abridged by Susanna Dobson from the Mémoires pour la vie de François Pétrarque, first published in three volumes, 1764--67, by the abbé de Sade, not to be confused with his notorious nephew, the Marquis de Sade. Susanna Dobson (d. 1795) was the wife of Matthew Dobson, author of several medical treatises. This was her first book and Dr. Johnson noted it more or less favourably. While the work proved to be very popular and had reached a sixth edition by 1805 and although she published other works and translations, she failed to secure a place in literary circles. Additional erratum slip pasted on p. xxxii at the foot of the the errata at the end of the preface. ESTC n19854.
