For a full bibliographical description and overview of the so-called Hawkesworth editions of the works of Swift issued in quarto, large octavo, small octavo and 18mo formats between 1754-5 and 1779, see H. Teerink and Arthur H. Scouten, A bibliography of the writings of Jonathan Swift, 2nd ed. (Philadelphia 1963), pp. 80-83 and table, p. 104. The Soane set is the large octavo edition, the first 14 volumes of which were reprinted in 1768 (q.v.); it further comprises the 1775 printing of volumes XV--XVII (q.v.). The present catalogue entry describes the first three volumes of literary correspondence, treated as volumes XVIII--XX of the collected works which it was intended to accompany. The Letters, ... from the year 1703 to 1740 were first published in 1766, with 'A New Edition' issued in the same year and reprinted (again as 'A New Edition') in 1769; a second series of Letters, ... from the year 1710 to 1742, numbered as volumes IV--VI, appeared in 1768 (q.v.). The Soane copy of the first series appears to be a variant of the 1769 edition (unrecorded by Teerink-Scouten or ESTC) with the first volume dated 1768. In volume I p. xiv is misnumbered xvii. Index at the end of vol. III. ESTC t141028; Teerink-Scouten 88a(2).
