With half-titles reading 'Supplement To Swift's Works. Volume XXIV (XXV). 1776 (1779).'. Edited by J. Nichols. The title and imprint of the second volume vary (see below). For a full bibliographical description and overview of the so-called Hawkesworth editions of the works of Swift issued in quarto, large octavo, small octavo and 18mo formats between 1754-5 and 1779, see H. Teerink and Arthur H. Scouten, A bibliography of the writings of Jonathan Swift, 2nd ed. (Philadelphia 1963), pp. 80-83 and table, p. 104. The Soane set is the large octavo edition, the first 14 volumes of which were reprinted in 1768 (q.v.); it further comprises the 1775 printing of volumes XV--XVII (q.v.) and six volumes of Letters, 1768--9 (q.v.; q.v.). The present catalogue entry describes the two-volume Supplement which was intended to complete the series and forms volumes XXIV and XXV of the large octavo editions, as described on the versos of the half-titles. The title of the second volume includes a volume statement and names 'Mrs. Johnson' as one of the participating authors; it has the imprint: Printed for J. Nichols; sold by H. Payne; and N. Conant, 1779. ESTC t195297; Teerink-Scouten 88.

Copy Notes Bound as volumes XXIV--XXV in a collected set of the large octavo edition in 25 volumes.

Binding C18th tree calf, gilt roll-tooled borders to the covers, gilt-tooled spine, red and green morocco spine-labels lettered in gilt 'Swift's Works.' and 'Vol: XXIV. (- XXV.)'.
