The first edition appeared earlier the same year. The genuineness of the collection has been questioned by various authorities (including Lowndes, Barbier, Vacant et Magenot, etc.), the authorship being attributed to the prolific French writer Louis-Antoine de Caraccioli, but with the exception of some of the letters, it is regarded as genuine by Alfred von Reumont in his Ganganelli, Papst Clemens XIV: seine Briefe und seine Zeit (Berlin 1847). Volume I has a publisher's advertisement on the verso of the half-title, and an explanation of the allegorical plate with advertisement for the present work 'deux vol. grand in-12' on the title-page verso signed by Lottin je in manuscript. In vol. II an errata sheet for the first volume follows the table of contents, and the final leaf [Nn4] is blank. A third volume was published in 1777.

Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on second front free-endpaper of vol. I: John Soane / 1803 and price 0/4/0. Various booksellers' inscriptions in pencil on both front free-endpapers.
