'S.G.S.' = Simon Goulart Senlisien. The French protestant theologian Simon Goulart, born in Senlis, was a prolific writer, translator, annotator and compiler of usually anonymous works. This treatise by Caspar Peucer deals with divination, magic, oracles, theomancy, astrology, and meteorology, and was first published in Latin in 1553 at Wittenberg, where Peucer was professor of mathematics and the son-in-law of the humanist theologian Philipp Melancthon. The present edition, with the 'Epistre' dated ' ... ce dernier iour de Decembre 1583', appears to be a reissue of an edition published in Antwerp by 'Heudrik' [i.e. Hendrik] Connix in 1584, with the 'Epistre' dated 'ce neufieme iour de Iuin, 1584'. With a woodcut title-page vignette, head-pieces, and initials throughout. Two pages of 'Favtes Plvs Notables A Corriger' (sig. Qqq2v and Qqq3r) at end; the final leaf Qqq4 is blank. Page 651 misnumbered 251.

Copy Notes Ownership inscription in ink on title-page: E[m or ni?]p[iu?]s / 1598. Booksellers' annotations in pencil and ink on the front and rear free-endpapers: Collated, -8-, scarce, 1=11=6; also former library shelf-mark (?) P.6..

Binding C18th(?) calf, gilt French fillet borders with floral corner ornaments, gilt-tooled spine compartments with dolphin, fleur-de-lys and coronet roll-tool at the tail of the spine, brown (faded red?) morocco spine-label, marbled endpapers.
