'Printed by Luke Hansard & Sons'. First and second editions also published in 1821. One of Pitt's closest confidants and advisors throughout his life, Tomline was his tutor at Pembroke, and his private secretary at the beginning of his term as Prime Minister, from 1783 until Pitt secured him his appointment as Bishop of Lincoln in 1787. Tomline attended Pitt on his deathbed, being named his literary executor. Little use was made of Pitt's letters by Tomline in the present memoir, which closes at the end of 1793, and the public, eagerly expecting a revealing intimate portrait of the statesman, was sorely disappointed by Tomline's circumspection.
