'Printed by J. Moyes' - title-page verso. Large paper issue with p. 258 in vol. II correctly numbered. This is the first edition of Southey's most celebrated prose work, published late in the year of his appointment as Poet Laureate. For a cogent account of why Southey succeeded so well with this work, see the entry in the The Cambridge history of English and American literature (1907–21), vol. XI, pp. 19--20. With a portrait of Nelson engraved by James Hopwood as the frontispiece of vol. I, and the handwriting facsimile plate as the frontispiece for vol. II. The final three pages of vol. I advertised 'Valuable Works Lately Published, In The Press, Or Publishing, By John Murray, ...'; pages 276--280 of vol. II contain further publisher's advertisements.
