This is the translation of the author's Mémoires, first published Amsterdam, 1717. Titles of vols II--IV abbreviated. The dedication to William Congreve is signed by the translator, Peter Davall. Retz was one of the leaders of the aristocratic rebellion against Anne of Austria, as regent for her son the future Louis XIV, and Cardinal Mazarin, known as the Fronde. With frontispiece portrait of the author engraved by M. van der Gucht. The final leaf of vol. III as recorded in the above collation is a blank.'The History Of The Conspiracy Of The Count John Lewis de Fiesque Against the Republick of Genoa' (vol. IV, p. 107--74) has special title-page, dated 'Printed in the Year 1722'. ESTC t88963.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone for 9s., 8 July 1807. (Spiers Box). With Boone's price and codes in pencil on the front free-endpaper. Ink stamp impression of a calligraphic monogram 'WF' (?) on verso of first front free-endpaper in all volumes.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt double-ruled borders and spines with gilt-tooled interlaced cornerpieces repeated in the spine compartments, red and black brown morocco spine-labels.
