Title-pages printed in red and black. Rapin de Thoyras, a French protestant, was an officer in a company of French refugee volunteers in the army of William of Orange before turning to history. He had begun work on his Histoire d'Angleterre in 1714 and ten volumes were published in the Hague in 1724--27. The first volume of Nicolas Tindal's translation, the first into English, was published by the booksellers John and James Knapton in 1725; further volumes followed from 1726 and the translation was completed in 15 volumes octavo in 1731. As individual volumes continued to be reprinted (and the sheets of earlier issues used in later ones), sets may be made up of various impressions and editions. The plates comprise genealogical tables, maps, and royal portraits by George Vertue. Tindal's translation includes copious new footnotes and occasionally political criticism, which contributed in no small part to the success of Rapin's History, which remained the standard work on English history until it was superseded by David Hume. A second, folio edition in two volumes was published in 1732-3 (q.v.) and Tindal also wrote a continuation as volumes III and IV. - The Soane set is made up of the 1728 impression of volumes I, III and IV; the 1729 impression of volumes V--IX; the 1730 impressions of volumes II and X--XIII; and the 1731 impression of volumes XIV and XV.
