Porter, a noted British artist, was appointed historical painter to the Czar Alexander I in 1804. Following his marriage early in 1812 to a Russian princess, he was warmly received in Russian military and diplomatic circles, where he became well acquainted with Russian accounts of the events of 1812--13. His Narrative was first published shortly after his return to England in 1813. It includes a stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait of Prince Koutousoff [Kutuzov] engraved by James Hopwood and maps engraved by Samuel Neele, with hand-coloured battle positions.
