Edited by Madame Salvage de Faverolles. First published by Firmin Didot in Paris and reissued in the same year in London, Berlin and Brussels. Contains 298 letters written from 1796 to 1814 between Napoleon and Josephine, and Josephine's letters to their daughter Hortense. The seven plates are lithographic facsimiles of letters, one of which (in vol. II) is printed on both sides. Ten years before this collection was published, Soane had acquired a copy of Charles Percier and P.F.L. Fontaine's Palais, maisons, et autres édifices modernes, dessinés à Rome, 1798 (q.v.) with a complete duplicate set of hand-coloured plates, which was specially made-up by the authors for presentation to Josephine, probably around the time they were commissioned in 1799 to transform Malmaison into a suitable residence for the First Consul.

Binding Later C19th half calf, blind roll-tooled borders, brown ribbed morocco-grain cloth boards, thick-thin gilt-ruled spine, maroon and green morocco spine-labels.

Additional Names Hortense, Empress Consort of Louis, King of Holland (1783--1837); Josephine, Empress, consort of Napoléon I, Emperor of the French (1763--1814) - Dedications; Salvage de Faverolles, Madame
