Dr Johnson's A dictionary of the English language was first published in 1755, with a second edition (q.v.) appearing in the same year. This work was first published in 1785 under the title A general and complete dictionary of the English language. In previous editions the preface was signed 'J' but here the preface has been rewritten and is unsigned. The dictionary and lists are printed in two columns, unpaginated.
