Naudé, physician, and father of French bibliography, librarian to Richelieu and Mazarin, accompanied Cardinal di Bagno (1578--1641) on his return from France to Italy in 1629 where the experience influenced his political thought greatly. The original publication of this Machiavellian work was in Rome in only 12 copies in 1639. The second edition was published in Amsterdam by Daniel Elzevier in 1667. See J.A. Copy Notes Bound (2) after King's verse translation of Ovid, The art of love, [1708] (q.v.) and purchased by Soane as vol. II in a two-volume set with King's Miscellanies in prose and verse, [1709] (q.v.).

Binding C18th Cambridge-style panelled calf, gilt-tooled spine compartments, red morocco spine-label in second spine compartment reading 'King's Miscella[nies]' and in third compartment 'Vol II'.
