Izaak Walton first published The compleat angler in 1653 and Charles Cotton's work of the same title was first published in 1676. The first edition of this version appeared in 1760 and Hawkins' 'Notes' etc. were first published in the edition of 1766. This is actually the seventh edition, being a reissue of the 1792 reprint. Part two has a title-page dated 1797, reading 'The Complete Angler. Part II. Being Instructions how to Angle for a Trout or Grayling in a clear Stream.', and separate pagination but continuous register. Illustrated with three plates of fishing tackle, two plates of music, and four woodcuts in text. Soane enjoyed fishing during family visits to Chertsey (see S. Copy Notes Inscribed in ink on half-title John Soane / 1800. With plate V in vol. I bound before plates III and IV. Soane appears to have bought another copy of 'Waltons Angler' in Roehampton for 8s. on 1 September 1804, possibly as a gift. (Jnl 5).

Binding Early C19th tree sheep, gilt double-ruled spine, without spine-label or lettering. Endleaves watermarked '1808'.
