The collected works of Samuel Johnson were first published in eleven volumes in 1787, with an additional two volumes, numbered twelve and thirteen, issued in the same year and a fourteenth volume in the following year. The 'Essay on the Life and Genius of Samuel Johnson' in vol. I by Arthur Murphy is new to this edition and was also published separately in the same year.
