Anonymous. By Daniel Defoe. Collective title-page printed in red and black; with an additional title-page in each volume. The first volume of The complete English tradesman, in familiar letters was originally published in 1725; A supplement ... was issued in 1726 and was incorporated into the second edition of 1726 (dated 1727 on the title-page). The second volume was first published as The compleat English tradesman. Volume II in 1727. The third edition of the first volume with the collective title-page dated 1732 as above is found with the second volume in the original edition or in the second edition dated 1732, as in the Soane copy described here. With publisher's advertisements on p. [ii] and the four final pages of vol. I, and p. [ii] of vol. II. In vol. II the two parts are separately paginated and p. xiv is misnumbered xvi. One of Defoe's most substantial works on the practical side of commercial life. ESTC t71963 (vol. I), ESTC n67419 (vol. II); Moore 475; Furbank and Owens 224 & 239.

Copy Notes Bound as part of a uniformly bound 48-volume set of works by or attributed to Defoe which on the evidence of endleaves variously watermarked '1814', '1808', etc. was presumably assembled around 1810--15.

Binding C19th half calf, marbled-paper boards, gilt-tooled spine direct-lettered in gilt 'Defoe's Works' and 'English Tradesman Vol. I. (II.)'.
