The Deluge.

The title is taken from the drop-head title on page [1]. The plate is signed J. Martin and dated 1825. The description or numerical key to the painting is preceded by verses from Byron's 'Heaven and Earth'. The painting was first exhibited in 1826. Martin was a successful historical painter and engraver, specialising in "apocalyptic" images.

Copy Notes An inscription in ink on p. 3 (not by Soane) calculates the heights of the mountains shown in the picture as between 15,000 and 4,000 feet. Bound (11) with other pamphlets and manuscripts.

Binding C19th half dark green roan, blind double-ruled borders, marbled-paper boards, gilt double-rule spine direct-lettered in gilt 'Brooksean Museum &c', later numbered '47' in a series of pamphlet volumes. Bound by Edwin Hutchinson for 2s. 6d. on 22 December 1830. (Archive 7/15/8).
