Anonymous. By John Martin, the artist and engraver of the original painting 'The Fall of Babylon' (1819) and the publisher of this description. The title is taken from the drop-head title on page [1]. The text is accompanied by an unsigned, outline etched plate, reproducing features of the original painting numbered 1--14, which are explained in the text. Finally, on page [3], there is a catalogue of 'Engravings by Mr. Martin' with the imprint at the end 'London: Orders to be addressed to Mr. Martin, 30, Alsop's Terrace, New Road; -- if from the Country, with reference to the Agent in Town. January, 1832'.
Copy Notes A copy of the mezzotint was presented to Soane by Martin with an ALs dated 2 April 1832, in thanks for the flattering opinion Soane had expressed of the original painting. (Drawer 88/1; Priv. Corr. XVI.F.98).
