Title from the general title-page, in vol. I only. Translation by William Melmoth. The volume title-page to vol. I reads 'Cato: Or, An Essay On Old-Age. By Marcus Tullius Cicero. With Remarks By William Melmoth, Esq. The Second Edition, ... Vol. I.' and has an engraved vignette portrait of Cato; the title-page to vol. II reads: 'Lælius: Or, An Essay On Friendship. ... Vol. II.', with a portrait of Scipio Africanus. The first edition of Melmoth's translation of Cicero's Cato major de senectute was published in 1773. With errata at the end of vol. I and facing p. 1 in vol. II. ESTC t138910.

Binding C18th tree calf, gilt-tooled spine, red and blue morocco spine-labels. Uniformly bound with Melmoth's translations of Cicero's Letters, 1778 (q.v.) and Pliny's Letters, 1778 (q.v.).
