QUINTILIAN
[Institutio oratoria. English. 1774]
Quintilian's Institutes of the orator. In twelve books. Translated from the original Latin, according to the Paris edition of Professor Rollin, and illustrated with critical and explanatory notes, by J. Patsall, A.M. In two volumes. ...
London: printed for B. Law, and J. Wilkie, 1774.
2 vols ; 21.8 cm. (8º)
I: viii, xii, 404 p.
II: [4], 441, [3] p.

A rival translation of Quintilian's Institutio oratoria to that of William Guthrie published in 1756 (1805 ed., q.v.). With a final leaf of advertisements for 'Books Printed for B. Law' in vol. II. ESTC t139487.

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting vol. I. Inscribed in pencil on front pastedown 2d Volume only. Soane purchased a copy of 'Quintillianus 2 Vols' from Robert Faulder for £1 6s. on 14 February 1804. (Archives 7/3/1; Cheque stubs, 14 February, 1804 6/24; and Jnl 4, p. 437). It is not clear that this is the copy bought on that occasion, as only vol. II is listed in the MSS. catalogue compiled by C.J. Richardson in 1830--1831, and it seems more likely that the copy bought from Faulder was a Latin text rather than the present, imperfect English translation in a modest binding.

Binding Early C19th mottled calf, gilt-ruled spine, red morocco spine-label. Bound by Peter Low for 4s. 6d., 14 April 1806. (Spiers Box).

Reference Number 900
