The additional engraved title-plate reads 'Histoire Du Japon'. First edition of the French translation of Kaempfer's 'Geschichte und Beschreibung von Japan', itself first published in English translation in 1727 (q.v.) and re-issued in the following year with a second appendix. The French has been variously attributed to Francois Naudé, Jean Néaulme and Pierre Desmaizeaux. Includes a life of the author. The 'Appendice Ou Supplement De L'Histoire Du Japon' (vol. II, pp. [1]--73 (2nd set)) is a translation of 6 sections from the author's Amoenitates exoticae (Lemgo 1712) relating to Japanese matters, including tea, paper manufacture, moxa, acupuncture and ambergris. The 'Appendice Second De L'Histoire Du Japon du Docteur Engelbert Kæmpfer, Faisant Partie d'un Journal authentique du Voyage que les Anglois firent au Japon en l'an 1673' (vol. II, p. 73--86 (2nd set)) is signed at end 'Simon Delboe, Hamond Gibben, Guillaume Ramsden', and was first published in a second issue of the first English edition in 1728. Engraved vignettes by D. Coster. Engraved plates by Gerard van der Gucht, C. Moore (i.e. Charles Moore?), George King and William Hulett in part after the author's drawings. Plate [XLII] misnumbered XXII.

Copy Notes Bought from Thomas Boone on 4 July 1815 for 2 guineas. (Spiers Box). With Boone's price and codes in pencil on front free-endpaper of vol. I: Numerous Objects on 45 Large Curious / Copper Plates / 2 toms £2=s2=d0. Six days later Soane purchased the original English edition (q.v.) from the same bookseller.

Binding C18th mottled calf, blind triple-ruled borders, gilt triple-ruled spine compartments with gilt-tooled coronet with five visible strawberry leaves over an interlaced device, red morocco spine-labels, marbled endpapers.
