First edition of the collected works of John Sheffield, Duke of Buckingham, edited by Alexander Pope; an earlier unauthorised collection had been issued by Edmund Curll in 1721. A variant (ESTC t86939) has imprint reading: Printed for John Barber, and sold by the booksellers of London and Westminster, 1723. Volume I has a half-title reading 'The Works of His Grace John Duke of Buckingham in Verse and Prose' and is preceded by a declaration signed Carteret, dated 18 April 1722, granting John Barber a royal licence to print and publish Buckingham's Works for fourteen years. 'The Tragedy of Julius Caesar Altered' and 'The Tragedy of Marcus Brutus' (vol. I) have separate title-pages, dated 1722. Engraved frontispiece and ornaments by Paul Fourdrinier; portrait by George Vertue after Geoffrey Kneller; one ornament engraved by Bernard Baron (vol. I, p. 335). Includes in vol. II 'Some Account Of The Revolution' (pp. 69--102) and 'A Feast Of The Gods' (pp. 159--172), which are excised in some copies, because they gave offence to the King. ESTC t86912.
Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting the half-title to vol. II. Bought from Thomas Boone for 6s., 8 July 1807. (Spiers Box). With Boone's pencilled codes on front pastedown of vol. I, and earlier booksellers' marks on front free-endpaper. Inscribed in ink on front free-endpapers H. Hobart.
Binding C18th Cambridge-style blind-panelled calf, gilt-ruled spine, red and dark brown morocco spine-labels.
