Volume I only bears an edition statement, and was originally published in 1776; volume II was first published in 1782, and volumes III and IV in 1789. Volume II exists in two impressions, both with the imprint: Printed for the Author: and sold by J. Robson; and G. Robinson, 1782. In the first the long 's' is used, the signature on p. 301 is Qq2, and on p. 320, line 8 of the text begins: 'placable'; in the second, probably issued in 1789 with the second edition of vol. I in which the modern 's' is also used, the modern 's' is used throughout, the signature on p. 301 is 4H, and on p. 320, line 8 of the text begins: 'cable'. The Soane set has vol. II in the first(?) impression, and may be a mixed set with volume I only in the second edition, but possibly issued thus. The engraved plates and folded letterpress leaves in vol. I are numbered 1, II--IX. With 111 leaves of engraved music, printed on both sides and numbered as pages to be bound with the letterpress. The plates are engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi, Giovanni Battista Cipriani, Pierre Maleuvre and Charles Grignion. Frontispiece portrait by Bartolozzi after Reynolds, dated 1784. The engraved music is printed on leaves watermarked '1803'. Includes a 'Chronological list of the principal books published on the subject of music in England, during the present century' in vol. IV, pp. [687]--688. Burney was the organist at the Royal Hospital Chelsea where Soane accepted the post of Clerk of Works in 1807. ESTC t149621 (vol. I), t149622 (vols II--IV).

Copy Notes Imperfect; wanting a final leaf of directions to the binder in vol. I, pp. 37--38 (sig. F3) in vol. II, and the frontispiece depicting Apollo and Daphne in vol. IV.
