The title-page in both volumes is engraved. Includes a list of subscribers. Some plates have tissue-guards. The engraved frontispiece portrait of Sir Walter Blackett in vol. I is by J. Fittler after a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, engraved. The engraved frontispiece in vol. II 'Head of a River God: The Tyne, designed by Sir William Chambers, J. Fittler, Sculp.'; the design was used as part of the series of river sculptures decorating the river front block at Somerset House, centralising the Navy Offices. Brand was Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries from 1778 until his death in 1806. This work, like his earlier Observations on popular antiquities, Newcastle, 1777 (rev. ed. 1813, q.v.) originated as a revision and expansion of a work by the Newcastle antiquary Henry Bourne, The history of Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle, 1736. ESTC t144797; Goldsmiths' 13763.

Binding C18th sprinkled calf, gilt-beaded borders, gilt-tooled spine, black morocco spine-labels, marbled endpapers.
