Notes

There is an Adam office grey-washed finished drawing duplicate of Adam volume 23/140 at the West Yorkshire Archive Service, Morley (WYL5013/D/3/1/12). The drawing at WYAS had previously been catalogued as being intended for William Weddell’s bedchamber at his London townhouse at 6 Upper Brook Street (purchased in 1772). This is incorrect, as the chimneypiece was executed almost in accordance with Adam’s design in a bedchamber at Newby Hall itself. This room is now known as Lady Grantham’s bedchamber, and is among the private rooms of the house. It is unlikely that the chimneypiece was moved here from elsewhere as the eighteenth-century frieze around the top of the room is identical to that on the chimneypiece. The only variation between the drawing and the executed chimneypiece is the substitution of poppies for the oval medallions in the capitals.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
