Purpose

Aberlady Church, East Lothian: Monument to Lady Elibank, commissioned by Patrick Murray, 5th Lord Elibank, c1762-63, unexecuted (7)

Signed and dated

  • 1762

Notes

This unexecuted monument design was commissioned by Patrick Murray, 5th Lord Elibank, for his deceased wife Maria Margaretta, daughter of Cornelius de Yong, Lord of Elmeet, who had died in 1762. It was probably intended for Aberlady Church, East Lothian, as it is here that we find a later monument to Lady Elibank, to a different design, carved by Antonio Canova and including an inscription in Latin composed by Dr Johnson.

Elibank pursued a variety of economic interests, subscribing to the Firth and Clyde Canal and holding a partnership in a Dumfries Bank. He was also an East India Company proprietor and recipient of a West Florida grant of 20,000 acres from his nephew, Governor George Johnstone.

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
