Aspect

Plan of the ground storey of a house, with a thirteen- by-six/seven-bay central block, with the end and central five bays projecting on the principal front, and with paired half-turn staircases on the principal front, and with the end bays projecting on the garden front, and the central three bays forming a bow behind a seven-bay portico, and with a two-bay central bow on the left-hand side front, and a three-bay central bow on the right-hand side front, and the central block contains service rooms and a billiards room, and the central block is flanked by eight-bay quadrant links with three-bay triangular projections to the rear, connecting to quadrangular offices, which are eleven bays across the principal front, nine bays across the garden and side fronts, and the left-hand court contains domestic offices and a colonnaded court, and the right-hand court contains stables and coach houses, and also with a colonnaded court

Sir John Soane's collection includes some 30,000 architectural, design and topographical drawings which is a very important resource for scholars worldwide. His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger. These drawings sit side by side with 9,000 drawings in Soane’s own hand or those of the pupils in his office, covering his early work as a student, his time in Italy and the drawings produced in the course of his architectural practice from 1780 until the 1830s.
